What does traceroute show me?
Every network hop (router) that packets pass through to reach a destination, plus the response time at each hop and — on this tool — the location and ISP of each hop. That lets you pinpoint exactly where along the route a delay or failure occurs.
How is traceroute different from ping?
Ping only measures the round-trip time to the final destination, while traceroute reveals every intermediate hop along the path, so you can see precisely where on the route a problem happens rather than just that one exists.
Why do some hops show “* request timed out”?
Many routers are configured not to reply to traceroute probes (for security or performance), so they appear as a timeout even though traffic still passes through them. The trace simply continues to the next hop — a few stars in the middle of a route are normal and not an error.
